The other day I was at a supermarket looking at a vegetable and choosing the one I thought was fresh. One sweet young thing next to me asked, “Aunty, how to choose this vegetable, ah?” I suppose I must have looked like an “Aunty” to her and she could learn something from me. If the truth be known, I haven’t a clue what to look out for when choosing vegetables, well, except for cucumbers.
I remember years ago (well, more like two decades ago), I picked out some cucumbers only to be told by an “Aunty” whom I had just met at the supermarket that I shouldn’t have picked the ones I did and proceeded to explain to me the shape and texture of cucumbers I should look out for.
Nowadays, I am called “Aunty” by people who don’t know me by name. Paul Kiah laughed at me once when I commented about this until he was called “Uncle” by a shop assistant recently. He said the shop assistants used to call him “Leing Chye” when he was younger and then he became known as “Ah Kor”. Now he’s called “Uncle” and before we know it, people will start calling him “Ah Pak”!

Aha… talking abt being called “Aunty”… While I was working at d petshop, the lil’ kids address me as Aunty also la… ” Aunty, Aunty, can I see that dog ar?”
Yikes~ don’t bother… *chuckles*
Ya, ya, at least I’m not called Ah Por yet.
